Hello everybody out there, glad having found this site, because there is little knowledge about my FG 100 here in Germany. In the early 80's I. VIDEOS Marco Sfogli on his Ibanez MSM100 signature guitar. VIEW ALL VIDEOS. ARTIST FOCUS Eros Pistoia. VIEW MORE ARTISTS.
I have been playing this 1983 Ibanez FG 100 from a friend for a week or so and though I am strictly a Gibson guy I really like this guitar. Of course it is 30 years old so kind of vintage Ibanez.
My question is as follows: are the current Ibanez archtops from the AF151/155 and the AFJ91 series equally good as the older FG 100? And what about the new PM2? It sure looks great but does it sound as good as the older FG 100 series? Any experiences here? All these guitars would cost the same as a used FG 100 give or take.
I like the FG 100 much better than the 1977 Ibanez Johnny Smith I once owned. That was a strikingly beautiful guitar but sound wise not that great.
Regards,
DB
A hard-to-find Natural Blonde Finish 1988 Ibanez FG-100 archtop guitar in good condition.
The Ibanez FG-100 is one of Ibanez's most popular and rare original designs, made during the era when Japanese guitar craftsmanship was at its finest. Ibanez archtop guitars of this period are considered by many to be superior to Gibsons of the time. The FG-100 is particularly treasured and quite hard to find on the vintage market as far fewer of these were made then other Ibanez styles. This model was played by George Benson on his 1986 world tour, captured in the documentary “George Benson: Live at Montreux, 1986.”
The Ibanez FG-100 is a terrific jazz guitar that Ibanez built for several years in the 80's. Features include laminated maple top, back and sides; extremely comfortable 3-piece maple neck; quality tuners with Art Deco style chrome buttons; bound rosewood fretboard with block inlays; and a pair of terrific sounding Super 58 pickups perfectly voiced for jazz. This particular guitar has a beautiful, striking grain and a subtle curl along sections of the sides (see photo). It comes in the original hard shell case, which has some scratches and edge wear visible in the photos, but the OHSC is in generally very good shape.
This FG-100, Serial Number L830232, was made in Japan in 1988. It is in good condition and looks great, but it does have a few small flaws pictured in the accompanying images and described below:
A1) Some finish/binding deterioration on the high E side on the neck between frets 7 and 9, and below the 12th fret.
A2) Some finish wear on the low E side on the neck between the nut and fret 5, with a slightly larger worn spot between frets 3 and 5.
A3) A thin line of binding/finish wear on the low E side on the neck between frets 12 and 15.
B) Some very light buckle rash on the back and pickguard (highlighted area in photos), really only visible when held up to the light.
c) A side crack in the high E upper bout. I think this is a deep finish crack, but it may be a crack in the upper layer of the laminated side. If so, it does not appear to extend through all the laminate layers, and it is not likely to spread further as it might if it were a solid wood side.
D) Some light scratches and edge wear on the headstock face plate.
Ibanez FG-100 guitars are highly treasured and rarely come up for sale - partly because relatively few of them were made, and especially because once you have one, you won't want to part with it! Don't hesitate to grab this wonderful example of a truly great jazz box at a great price! Contact me if you'd like more information about this rare beauty. I will consider reasonable offers.
